How are GS1-128 Labels different from Shipping Labels?
Most of you might have heard about the term “GS1-128 label” for the first time when you are at the stage of selecting your EDI service provider or going through your supplier contract from your trading partner. A shipping label is an identification label by a mail carrier like FedEx or UPS that is affixed to a container/pallet/box which displays the information to direct the packages and ensure correct service is provided. It usually lists the origination and destination addresses of the shipment, package quantity, method of shipping (standard, express etc.). Shipping labels have nothing to do with EDI information being transmitted and are independent of someone using EDI or not.
On the other hand, GS1-128 (formerly known as UCC-128) shipping labels are logistic labels which enable shipment visibility within a supply chain. The primary purpose of utilizing GS1-128 shipping labels is to match a shipment with data being exchanged via EDI. The information it contains identifies the contents of the carton.
